چکیده

We present the results of a survey for stellar and substellar companions to 82 young stars in the nearby OB association Upper Scorpius. This survey used nonredundant aperture mask interferometry to achieve typical contrast limits of K 5Y6 at the diffraction limit, revealing 12 new binary companions that lay below the detection limits of traditional high-resolution imaging; we also summarize a complementary snapshot imaging survey that discovered seven directly resolved companions. The overall frequency of binary companions ( 35þ5 4 % at separations of 6Y435 AU) appears to be equivalent to field stars of similar mass, but companions could be more common among lower mass stars than for the field. The companion mass function has statistically significant differences compared to several suggestedmass functions for the field, andwe suggest an alternate lognormal parameterization of themass function. Our survey limits encompass the entire brown dwarf mass range, but we only detected a single companion that might be a brown dwarf; this deficit resembles the so-called brown dwarf desert that has been observed by radial velocity planet searches. Finally, our survey’s deep detection limits extend into the top of the planetary mass function, reaching 8Y12 MJup for half of our sample. We have not identified any planetary companions at high confidence (k99.5%), but we have identified four candidate companions at lower confidence (k97.5%) that merit additional follow-up to confirm or disprove their existence. Evolution of brown dwarf disks: A Spitzer survey in Upper Scorpius

We have carried out a Spitzer survey for brown dwarf disks in the ∼5Myr old Upper Scorpius (UpSco) star forming region, using IRS spectroscopy from 8 to 12μm and MIPS photometry at 24μm. Our sample consists of 35 confirmed

A search for planetary-mass objects and brown dwarfs in the Upper Scorpius association

We report the results of a deep photometric search for planets and brown dwarfs in the nearby young OB Upper Scorpius association. We obtained optical (I) and near-infrared (JKs) images around nine very lowmass stars and brown dwarf member candidates of the association, covering a total area of 113 arcmin. Using a point spread function subtraction technique, we have searched for planetary-mass ...

We are conducting a U, B, R, I monitoring program to identify pre-main sequence stars and brown dwarfs in a 12.5 o × 12.2 o region of the Upper Scorpius OB association (5–10 Myr). We will use these data in combination with a follow-up spectroscopy survey to derive the low mass IMF in Upper Sco and to explore the prevalence of 5–10 Myr circumstellar disks. We will also analyze the spatial distri...

Substellar Companions to Main-sequence Stars: No Brown Dwarf Desert at Wide Separations

We use three field L and T dwarfs that were discovered to be wide companions to known stars by the Two Micron All-Sky Survey to derive a preliminary brown dwarf companion frequency. Observed L and T dwarfs indicate that brown dwarfs are not unusually rare as wide ( AU) systems to F–M0 main-sequence stars D 1 1000 ( , ), even though they are rare at close separation ( AU; the “brown dwarf desert...

How Dry Is the Brown Dwarf Desert?: Quantifying the Relative Number of Planets, Brown Dwarfs and Stellar Companions around Nearby Sun-like Stars

Sun-like stars have stellar, brown dwarf and planetary companions. To help constrain their formation and migration scenarios, we analyse the close companions (orbital period < 5 years) of nearby Sun-like stars. By using the same sample to extract the relative numbers of stellar, brown dwarf and planetary companions, we verify the existence of a very dry brown dwarf desert and describe it quanti...
